Christmas is my favourite holiday! I freaking love it, the food, friends, time with family, giving presents, the Christmas tree and mostly the songs! What is Christmas without the songs?
Last year I recorded a Christmas album, a bunch of classics, along with an original song, and that's what I wanna talk about. Not the original songs but the covers I did.
It can be so difficult for indie artists to get the funds together to record and release music, but I think there is a big missed opportunity when it comes to holiday tracks. Now I've talked about this briefly in a previous blog, but if you're looking for content to put out, which you should be, then recording an acoustic version of your favourite holiday track is the way to go.
Now I will be doing a video on covering other artists songs in the coming weeks, but first, I want to cover our holiday tracks so you can quickly and inexpensively get a holiday track out in time for Christmas.
Now, so we don't have to worry about...
Let's start by saying that wanting to quit... it's a pretty common feeling and thought process for an indie artist. Why? Because this stuff is freaking hard! You are technically self-employed, and if you lack the skills to be your own boss, or lack the motivation or the initiative to start something and continue it with consistency, then yeah, it's bloody hard!
There are so many reasons you might feel like quitting. No one is listening or responding to your music, you've run out of money, or maybe you have no money to start with. Perhaps you're sick of seeing no results after putting in tons of effort and money. Maybe your family is telling you it's time to quit?
I'm pretty sure I went through all of the above feelings, and I really did want to quit, but thankfully I just couldn't find it in myself to give up. And that's what I want for you!
Here are 4 things I want you to remember when the going gets tough, and you're about to quit.
1. Why did you start your...
We've all seen "The Voice", "Idol", "Australia's Got Talent", or "whichever country you're from has talent", "The X Factor" ... we know what they are, and they just seem so damn appealing, don't they? Oh, I fell for it.. that promise of a chance at sweet, sweet victory! Adoring fans and a recording contract... overnight success!
Bzzz wrong! I will start by saying, on the very, very rare occasion, these singing shows can appear fruitful. Look at Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Guy Sebastian. There are a few that continue their success after the show is over, but not many.
I am entirely against being on a reality television show. Firstly, the contracts suck! They totally own your a**, how do I know? Because I've seen them. Second, it's hard to be who you are as an artist because they have a direction they want you to take. And third.. they all want a sad backstory. I have one, but no way was I selling out to that.
There are 3 questions that you have to ask yourself...
I've been writing music for a long time, and I've been lucky enough to learn from some brilliant writers. I have also been lucky enough to win the Australian Song of the Year award twice, plus I've had many songs on the charts. But ... that wasn't always the case.
Most of my songs in the early stages sucked! So perhaps you can relate? You write out your Song, put a melody to it and BAM! You got a song, baby! But most times, it's not a good song you might think it is ... but it's probably not.
Songwriting is a craft, and it takes time to get good at it. There are formulas to writing hit songs, and some people do this far more naturally than others. For me, I had a little bit of skill, but ultimately it came down to practice. Did you know that songwriting is something that you should practice? So many artists don't realise that it is something we need to work on. It's a craft that needs to be honed.
But! There are some things that will help you write that hit song!...
Easy on me... I didn't love it on the first listen, but I took another listen, and the hooks in the song came shining through, and I was mesmerised. But seriously... how is it that this woman can go years without releasing music, laying low and then bam! She's got a new song, and it breaks Spotify records and even manages to crash her website?
In 2016, my husband got a phone call, his duo gig had been cancelled, and I was like, "why?" he said, "well... I just got asked to sing on the Adele tour" yeah, right! and he said "no I'm serious" and my response was "but you're not even the singer in the house" for you that don't know, he is a guitarist! So anyway, it turns out he was invited to sing in her male choir for the 2 Sydney shows. I was stoked because I got free tickets to the show.
The concert started with a recording of her repeating the word "hello" and just a picture of her eyes with the famous cat-eye make-up. It was spine-tingling. She came out and won her...
Alright! The big one! Welcome to the final part of the 4-part series Music & Mindset. I hope you've enjoyed the series so far. I also hope that you will take the time to read, process, consider and then action these changes in your life, because without it... I would go as far as to say .. it's impossible to be successful.
How to use mindset to succeed in your career:
Have you ever taken a minute to notice the eerily similar things successful people have to say? I'm talking about the uber-successful people like The Rock, Kevin Hart, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson, Mariah Carey, the list goes on. Their stories all sound the same; whether they knew the secret of mindset or not, they all had geared their mindset for success.
I remember watching Oprah, and she was talking to Michael Buble, who said he would keep his bible under his pillow and every single night as he went to sleep, would think of his life as a famous singer. He talked about how his...
Welcome to part 3 of the Music & Mindset series! Man! I love talking about this stuff, and I could do it all day long ... it's the only thing I have ever shared the same level of passion for as I do my music. I think that's because I credit changing my mindset and learning how to plan my life to the beautiful life I am finally living.
In this part of the series, I want to give you 3 of my best tips to help you gear your mindset for success. Now again ... don't discredit these because they sound silly, or you can't be bothered or because you think it won't work, if you're reading this, then whatever you are doing already is probably not working anyway... so I say.. what have you got to lose?
Alright .. here are my 3 best tips to help you gear your mindset for success!
1. Decide what you want!
- It's as simple as that, but you would be completely blown away at how many people actually don't take the time even to figure out precisely what it is that...
Welcome to part 2 of the Music & Mindset series!
In this part of the series, I want to delve into how mindset can change your life.
Now you may have hit rock bottom, and you just can't take any more of not moving forward, not seeing success, or maybe you just want to do better than you are already, whatever your goal, the only way you can make it happen is to change your mindset.
Your brain is on a loop:
- Most of us make one big mistake in our lives, and the majority of us don't even know it! We jump out of the driver's seat and put our brains on autopilot... this is why so many people have failing relationships. They take the same patterns and behaviours from one relationship to the next, and it's also why many big lottery winners end up more broke than they were before winning because they have patterns and behaviours on a loop. Most of the time, we don't even notice that we are doing the same things over and over, repeating the same mistakes until it's too late.
Welcome to part 1 of the 4-part series "Music & Mindset". I recently finished a 4-part series called "Music & Money", which I had some fantastic feedback for, so I have decided to do another series! This series focuses on the topic that I really believe will determine the outcome of your career and life and the overall level of success you can achieve.
This information is the closest thing I can give you to an overnight success pill!
What Is Mindset?
Your mindset is a series of beliefs or self-perceptions that you hold about yourself. These beliefs and perceptions are what determine your behaviour, attitude and overall outlook. For example, you may believe that only lucky people do well in life, or the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer, or, no matter how hard you work, you are just destined to be broke.
Over the past nine years, I have read countless books and have worked on changing my mindset. I hit rock bottom about nine years ago, lost...

*This information is based on my own personal experiences and research and is in no way professional advice. Before you make any kind of decision, financial or otherwise, you should get advice from a licensed professional.
Creating a personal budget for income that fluctuates can be difficult, but it's not impossible. After months of research, learning and reading, I created my own budget, and it has been working effectively for me for the past 4 years. I mainly use the strategies of the Barefoot Investor and Total Money Makeover books.
There will be a lot of information in this one to break this down into sections for you. Let's start with the 4 personal bank accounts you should have.
